The Unfortunate Release Struggles of ‘The New Mutants’

Remember The New Mutants? The first trailer for this movie was released on October 13, 2017, and its original release date was April 13, 2018.

It looked like a new interesting entry in the Fox’s X-Men franchise that had a different dark tone. It had an interesting cast that consisted of Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, Glass) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Samuel Guthrie/Cannonball.

The movie revolved around mutants who were just discovering their abilities that are trapped in a secret facility against their will. It was supposed to be a new start to a potential film trilogy with this first one having a unique horror aesthetic. It still hasn’t released. What happened?

The film was originally shot from July 2017 to September 2017. Director Josh Boone claimed the studio wasn’t letting the movie fully commit to the horror tone he originally wanted. The movie had successful test screenings and it seemed like the movie was going to release on its expected date.

When It in 2017 became a blockbuster, Fox decided to focus on the horror elements in the released trailer because of the success of the scary elements of It.  When Fox saw the positive responses of the trailer they decided to do reshoots to reflect the dark tone of the trailer. This resulted in the film’s release getting delayed till February 22, 2019, which was 10 months after its initial date. The reshoots would’ve also added additional characters as well.

It was then announced that Dark Phoenix’s release got delayed until February 14, 2019, because of Bohemian Rhapsody replacing its original November 2, 2018 spot. This resulted in The New Mutants getting delayed to August 2, 2019. As of right now, that is its “current release date”. Dark Phoenix has since then been moved to June 7, 2019, due to it being a potentially better release date in China, with Alita: Battle Angel replacing its February 14 spot.

When Anya Taylor-Joy spoke to Collider, she expressed her excitement over the movie, the character she’s playing, and said it was worth the wait.

“I don’t find [the delay] frustrating because when the film comes out, we want it to be something that will make the fans truly happy. Taking the time to do it, whilst people might find it a little bit frustrating to wait for it, when we deliver it, it’s going to be fantastic. That’s the most important thing. And getting the opportunity to play the character again is just great. I think we’re making the movie that we set out to make, in the beginning. That’s what we’re going to end up delivering to people. It feels like the movie we all signed up to do, which is good.”

When producer Simon Kinberg talked to Collider in October 2018 about the movie, the reshoots hadn’t even started yet. It was also revealed that the studio hadn’t even decided on the rating yet. Kinberg said the following:

“It’s the kind of movie that could go R, or it could be a hard PG-13. As I was saying before in terms of subgenres or the genre, it is obviously teased as a horror film, and most horror films these days are R-rated, but it stars a very young cast, so we’ll see. It really is what the movie wants to be. The studio is open to either rating… Traditionally, superhero movies are PG-13 other than Logan and the Deadpool movies, and generally, horror films are R-rated, so we’ll see where this one falls. It is a very scary, edgy movie.”

There was a rumor in January that Fox might just delay the movie again and release it on Hulu. Deadline talked to Fox producer Lauren Shuler Donner about those rumors and said she’s hopeful that doesn’t happen. Donner said the following

“They worked hard on it, I want to see it released (theatrically), I’d hate to see it thrown at Hulu.”

Will this movie get released in August? It has been reported Josh Boone is finally working on post-production of this movie. That can certainly mean the movie is on pace to release in August. Maybe the reshoots took place in secret?

If The New Mutants releases August 2019, that would make it about 16 months after its original release date.
