‘The Eternals’ Movie May Star Marvel Studios First Openly Gay Lead Actor

After Black Panther and Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios is looking to take the next step when it comes to diversity in their movies. A new report from The Hashtag Show states that Marvel Studios is looking to cast their first openly gay actor for the lead in their upcoming Eternals movie.

During Ant-Man & The Wasp’s press tour, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased an LGBT character coming to the MCU in the future. According to cast reports, it seems like The Eternals will feature Marvel’s first ever lead character played by an openly gay actor. The question is, what character will this actor be playing, and will he be gay in the movie? Now to be fair, the character who he is playing doesn’t have to be gay just because the actor is, but it seems Marvel could potentially make the character gay as well.

This would be a huge step forward for not only comic book movies, but movies in general if the news turns out to be true. However, Disney has had a tough time with gay characters up to this point. In 2017, some theaters actually banned, or put age restrictions on the film Beauty and the Beast because it featured the gay character LeFou (Josh Gad). In contrast, Disney recently announced a gay character in their upcoming Dwayne Johnson Emily Blunt movie Jungle Cruise. This announcement was met with much controversy as not only was the actor playing him Jack Whitehall not gay, but the character would not be depicted in a respectful way. Disney stated that the character would be played for comedic purposes only, which outraged many in the LGBTQ community.

Marvel is reportedly interested in actors Cameron Britton (Mindhunter) and Polish actor Tomasz Knot (Cold War) for a supporting role in the film. Marvel certainly has their work cut out for them when it comes to this film. However, if they take the character seriously and depict him in a respectful way, this film could be a gamechanger.

Marvel Studios The Eternals is directed by Chloe Zhao and is looking to start production fall 2019. Are you guys excited for this film? How would you feel about Marvel’s first lead gay character? And who would you like to see cast in the movie? Let us know in the comments down below or on Instagram and Twitter.
