A Complete Breakdown of the Leaked ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Poster

Warning: This Article May Contain Potential Spoilers for Star Wars: Episode IX. Read at your own risk.

Earlier today, a leaked Star Wars: Episode IX poster made its way onto the internet. A few hours later, a character lineup for the film leaked as well. Due to copyright issues, we will not be posting the official artwork on our website, however the artwork can be found easily online. We recommend you pull up the poster while reading this article to better follow along.

Before we begin, many have speculated that this poster might be fake or fan-made. To our best judgement as well as top source consensus, this poster is most likely real and used for promotional material only, such as toys or posters you might find at a local Walmart. We expect to see another poster revealed as the official, theatrical poster at Star Wars: Celebration. Without further ado, let’s dive into this poster!

We will begin with the middle of the poster as this is where the eye immediately gravitates towards. Both Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) sit front and center. Rey is wearing a white robe similar to the one we have seen in other leaked artwork, as well as holding what appears to be Anakin Skywalker’s repaired lightsaber. This could also be a new lightsaber hilt, but I think it is safe to assume Rey will be repairing the lightsaber that was broken in The Last Jedi. As for Kylo Ren, this poster lines up with the numerous rumors that his helmet would return, this time fused together with some form of red adhesive. We see this slightly at the bottom portion of his mask and it carries up the entire helmet. Kylo’s crossguard lightsaber returns as well, this time he’s holding it backwards, although this is likely meant for the poster, not how he will be fighting with it in Episode IX.

Surrounding the two central characters are our supporting cast, with many familiar faces and some new. Both Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) make appearances donning their outfits from the leaked set photos that emerged back in August 2018. Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) is positioned behind Rey’s left shoulder (right side of the poster), BB-8 appears with a new friend center-right, and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) makes his return sporting Chewbacca’s bandolier and bowcaster. This is by far the strangest detail of the poster and the one that is making many wonder the validity of the artwork. If any detail proves this poster is fake, it would be this one.

Three new characters appear on this poster, and we have names for two of them thanks to the leaked character lineup. The character on the left of Chewbacca is named Jannah, and she appears to be played by Naomi Ackie.

We see in the lineup image that she uses a bow to fight with, something we have seen very little of in Star Wars. The last time we saw a bow being used canonically was in Star Wars: The Clone Wars where the Nightsisters used them in combat. However this bow used by Jannah appears to be more mechanical than natural. Another new character sits to the left of Poe in a purple and gold outfit. This character’s name is Zorii, and rumored to be the character Keri Russell is playing.

The character looks like a bounty hunter of some sort, a faction that has been greatly missing from the sequel trilogy. It would be great to see her character fill that role in this trilogy. The final new character in this poster is an alien standing to the right of Finn. This character I believe is just an alien meant to attract viewers to the poster. I do not suspect this character will be featured heavily in the film. The character is still unnamed.

Looking at the villains for the film we have new additions as well as the return of the Knights of Ren. At the bottom of the poster we have a new form of stormtrooper who are red and bear resemblance to the prequel-era Phase II Clone Troopers. Thanks to some information gathered at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, we now know that they are the 709th Legion or The Red Fury. There are over 8,000 of them and they use a new TIE fighter called the TIE echelon. Here is an image of the fighter:

It is heavily rumored that the stormtroopers are the guards for Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren. We have seen their visor designs previously, as they were used for the hats crew members on the production. Here’s the picture:

We also have our first full look at the Knights of Ren. They are sitting to the right of Kylo Ren on the left side of the poster. There are six members, who look just as they did in The Force Awakens. There have been rumors for a long time that the Knights of Ren would be involved, possibly as the central antagonist if Kylo Ren is redeemed. This is one confirmation I am sure many fans are excited to see. The only note of interest that I can see currently is that one of them is wielding some form of non-lightsaber weapon, suggesting they might not be force sensitive. For a better concept of their design, check out this concept art below. Also please note that the role associated with each Knight is not official. Only the art was officially released by Lucasfilm.

A few minor details that are worth pointing out are our first looks at another new TIE fighter as well as new X-Wings, A-Wings and Y-Wings. The TIE, located in the bottom right corner of the poster, could be a new enhanced version of the TIE interceptor. However, we recently saw a TIE Interceptor in Star Wars: Resistance and that had a very different look to the one in the poster, so we may have multiple new variants in this final film. The Millennium Falcon makes its return as well. There were heavy rumors that the Falcon would have a new look in Episode IX, yet as far as I can tell there are no distinct changes to the ship in this image. As for the Resistance, we see in the top right new versions of the classic X-Wing, A-Wing and Y-Wing. These images line up with recent LEGO leaked set names for Episode IX, practically confirming the return of these classic ships. The X-Wing is orange, hinting it may be Poe’s, the A-Wing is blue similar to the ones seen in The Last Jedi and the Y-Wing is also an orange-red color. I am unable to tell from the image if the new X-Wings are the T-70 variant like Poe Dameron’s Black One or if they are New Republic issued T-85s as seen in the aforementioned Star Wars: Resistance. Here is the T-85, which is sleeker more rounded than the previous T-70.

Notably missing from the poster are several old characters confirmed for the film including Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) as well as new characters played by Richard E. Grant and Dominic Monaghan. Keri Russell may also be missing from the poster if she is not Zorii.

Overall this poster gave us a lot of new information to break down for the film. We expect nothing to be revealed until Star Wars: Celebration in a few weeks so for now Star Wars fans will just have to wait. I will also be covering Star Wars: Celebration so stay tuned for that.
