Breaking Down the Future of the MCU After ‘Avengers: Endgame’

*Warning this article contains major SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame officially marks the end of what Marvel has deemed the Infinity Saga. It is the perfect end to the story ten years in the making. Now while this is the end of the current chapter, there is also a new chapter being born. There are no end credit scenes in this movie however that doesn’t stop Marvel from giving significant hints to where this franchise might be headed.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

The next MCU movie post-Endgame is Spider-Man: Far From Home. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker is seen reuniting with Ned in the halls of their school. Since we see all of Peter’s high school gang in the trailer, they must assume they were also dusted. This film will likely explore Peter Parker on his own after the death of Tony Stark, who he looked to as a mentor in the first Spider-Man film. This film also hopes to show a growth of Peter as a man and to come into his own in a way that many comic book fans would find familiar.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The movie that Avengers: Endgame sets up the most is actually Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Not only are all the Guardians back including Gamora, but they officially recruited a new member. Yes, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will be joining the Guardians on their next adventure. Thor’s portrayal in Avengers: Endgame has garnered mixed responses from fans. Some fans loved how Thor was portrayed finding it very funny however others thought it was disrespectful to the character. Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt having to share the spotlight might be difficult considering they have relatively the same humor style. The plot will likely circle around the Guardians finding and redeeming Gamora. James Gunn will return to direct and the film currently has no release date.

Black Widow

It will be very interesting to see how Marvel handles the Black Widow film after her sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. The most likely option will be a prequel that will take place entirely in the past, mostly likely pre- Iron Man 2. The film will most likely explore her time as a Russian spy and as a member of the KGB. Another possibility is exploring her earliest times at S.H.I.E.L.D. and her partnership with Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye. We could possibly see the heavily teased Budapest mission. The film is currently also set to star David Harbour (Stranger Things), Rachel Weisz (The Favourite), and Florence Pugh (The Commuter).

The New Avengers

Ever since they teased it at the end of Age of Ultron, fans have wanted to see a new group of Avengers. Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and the Wasp could be some of the possible members. It could also feature some X-Men like Wolverine and Cyclops. It was great to see Ant-Man in Avengers: Endgame however I think they also need to upgrade the Wasp. She was the very first female Avenger in the comics and deserves more things to do in the MCU. Some possible villains they could face could be the Skrulls, Galactus, Apocalypse, or even the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Streaming Shows

Since Disney plans to release their upcoming streaming service, many Marvel characters have been receiving their own shows. Such as Loki, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Falcon, and Winter Soldier. When the Avengers traveled back to New York in 2012, Loki grabbed the tesseract and escaped. Where Loki went will probably be the premise of his show. It is set to star Tom Hiddleston but I wouldn’t be surprised if it centers around a younger version of him. For Falcon and Winter Soldier, at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the mantel of Captain America gets passed down to Sam. However, since the show is still called FALCON and Winter Soldier, it looks like Sam won’t be taking Captain America’s name. As for WandaVision, Vision is still dead so the plot will possibly revolve around bringing him back.

Other Storylines

While Avengers: Endgame does a lot to continue its ongoing storylines, it does not do a lot in terms of setting up new ones. There were no hints at the Eternals or the X-Men. They also don’t really tease any future storylines in terms of their solo movie sequels such as Black Panther 2 or Doctor Strange 2. There is a slight nod towards Namor and the people of Atlantis but it is very subtle. For future storylines, many fans want Secret Invasion or Secret Wars. There is also a huge nod towards a possible A-Force movie, which many cast members and fans have wanted to see for some time.
