Making Sense of ‘The Eternals’

While Marvel is keeping quiet about their plans post-Endgame and Phase 3 generally, it’s reassuring for fans knowing that some of the next generation of Marvel movies have already been leaked to the public. Upcoming movies such as Spider-Man: Far From Home, Black Widow, and The Eternals have all been confirmed with the former landing in July, the latter landing in 2020. Rumored movies include a sequel for Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel and the debut of Shang-Chi. While the future slate of movies seems like it’ll be nothing but continued success for the MCU, some fans were left scratching their heads after The Eternals was revealed to be one of the first releases during Phase 4.

While they may not have a prominent role in the current world of comics, the Eternals have the potential to be juggernauts for the cosmic side of the MCU, a side Marvel has recently expressed they’d like to expand upon. While movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and more recently Captain Marvel have shown fans a glimpse into that side of the world, the Eternals would go far deeper into space than any of the movies previously mentioned. Who exactly are the Eternals?

To put it lightly, the Celestials are the creators of everything in the Marvel universe. In the comics, all life stems from the Celestials. While it’s unclear how things came to be on the silver screen long ago, the Celestials have been mentioned more than a few times in the MCU. Their first mention came from The Collector while explaining the origin of the Infinity Stones to the Guardians, who were in possession of the Power Stone previously encased in the Orb. A few years later, Ego the Living Planet had revealed to his son that he himself, was a Celestial. The Celestials tend to tinker with things in order to perfect their way of living and one of their previous experiments lead to the creation of two races, the Eternals and the Deviants.

The Eternals (scientifically termed Homo Immortalis) were cosmically powerful beings with the ability to live on forever, while their opposites, the Deviants, were hard on the eyes and referred to as monsters. Both of these races lived on Earth separate from mankind but both were intertwined with humanity in their own ways. The Deviants were hell-bent on harming humanity in the hopes that one day they’d become their slaves, while the Eternals thought themselves as gods and occasionally intervened to protect humanity from the Deviants’ rage. The Deviants’ envy of the Eternals caused them to act out against humanity, hoping that the Eternals would rescue them each time and capitalize on their weaknesses by killing them.

With that being said, who would show up in this movie?

Just last month, we dropped an exclusive on The Eternals detailing a character breakdown for the film’s main protagonists. While none of the following characters have been confirmed, it’s safe to assume the Eternals would consist of Ikarus, Makkari, Sersi, Gilgamesh, Thena and potentially more.  Starfox could also be a possibility and would be a great tie in to the MCU considering his brother is actually Thanos, the mad Titan, a Deviant-like being himself. In the comics, A’Lars, an Eternal, was in charge of expanding the Eternal’s outreach into the universe and eventually landed for colonization of Titan and its moons. Fans may recognize Titan as being Thanos’s home planet in the MCU. A’Lars was also mentioned by the Red Skull as Thanos was pursuing the Soul Stone on Vormir during the events of Avengers: Infinity War.  While A’Lars himself is an Eternal, Thanos was born the same but with the appearance and rage of a Deviant, being termed in the comics as “Deviant Syndrome”.

Even the casual Marvel fan would be convinced to at least give the movie a try considering the Eternals are basically Marvel’s stand-in for Greek mythology. The casual moviegoer might not be as inclined to make the trip without being pulled in by something they’re familiar with or in this case someone. To make the property more attractive in the eyes of the public, Marvel went ahead and tapped Chloé Zhao to helm the movie while also hiring some A-list cast members in hopes of making the movie seem tempting in the eyes of target audiences who aren’t up to speed on the current events of the MCU. While none of the roles have been revealed yet, the likes of Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, and Ma-Dong Seok are all rumored to appear in the movie. Prominent names such as Keanu Reeves, Charlie Hunnam, and Priyanka Chopra have also been rumored to be in discussions for lead roles.
