CW’s ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ Begins Production

The CW’s adaptation of one of the biggest multiverse crossover events in comics history has begun production: Crisis on Infinite Earths, one of DC’s flagship ‘Crisis’ storylines, is getting a television adaptation through the CW’s ‘Arrowverse’ shows, which includes The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and the upcoming Batwoman series.

This news has seemingly been confirmed by ‘Arrowverse’ producer Marc Guggenheim, who posted on Twitter that production on the event has already begun. “Loving these so much. Everyone is hard at work already — the earliest start we’ve ever gotten on the crossovers — to make this as big and epic and FUN as we can conceivably manage.”

In addition to confirming the start of production, Guggenheim ended his tweet by teasing a special announcement at next month’s San Diego Comic-Con. “Don’t be surprised if we announce something pretty cool at SDCC…” What exactly the announcement will be is anyone’s guess, but if it ends up being related to Crisis, it’s sure to be exciting.

In case you’ve never had the chance to read it, Crisis on Infinite Earths was a 12-issue miniseries that DC published between 1985 and 1986 that acted as an attempt to condense the decades of continuity, dozens of confusing timelines, and hundreds of characters that DC had produced or acquired up to that point into a more reader-friendly and uniform universe. To explain everything that happened would take a series of articles on its own, but the end results of the series were as follows: every ‘Earth’ (essentially its own dimension) that had collectively compromised the DC multiverse was now combined into one, single, main ‘New Earth’ that included all of the heroes, villains, and characters that had before existed individually. Many characters died, others were changed forever, and the series left its mark on all of DC’s books essentially up until now. It was a landmark comic for both DC and the comics industry at large, so an adaptation of it is sure to shake things up in the ‘Arrowverse’ quite a bit.

The CW’s adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths will be a five-episode event that will begin airing in late 2019.
