The Arrowverse is building up for its largest scale crossover yet with this year’s upcoming event ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths,’ and a new development revealed by Deadline just goes to show how colossal this crossover is going to be. Earlier today, the news site announced that Tyler Hoechlin, the Arrowverse’s Superman, and Brandon Routh, from Superman Returns (2006), will both return in ‘Crisis’ to don the red cape.
Routh confirmed the news, retweeting the article and expressing his gratitude and excitement for his return as Superman: “Honored, humbled, grateful, and still pinching myself.” Hoechlin also took to Twitter to retweet the news and voice his own thoughts on the announcement: “Ohhhhhh boy! Things are about to get interesting … It’s good to be back team! Good to be back…”
The two Supermen will be from two different time frames within the crossover, though it has yet to be specified what role they will play. All that has been confirmed as of now is that Routh and Hoechlin will both play Clark Kent and wear the Superman suit. While having both of these Supermen in the crossover may seem far-fetched, as Routh already plays the Atom / Ray Palmer in the Arrowverse show Legends of Tomorrow, it would not be the first time an Arrowverse actor reprised a role from their past for a crossover.
Just last year, in the CW ‘Elseworlds’ crossover event, John Wesley Shipp, who plays Henry Allen and the Earth-3 speedster Jay Garrick on The Flash, returned to his role as Barry Allen (from Earth-90), wearing the suit he originally wore in the 90s Flash television show. Perhaps Routh will sport his original 2006 Superman Returns suit? We’ll just have to wait and see!
